Welcome to my first review. Starting small with my first game I played Helicopter2002 which is the second game released by DenSpel on Itch.io. Made using Raylib which is described by Itch.io as “a simple and easy-to-use library to enjoy videogames programming”, Helicopter2002 is a pixel art game made reminiscent of the classic 2002 flash game Helicopter. For those who don’t know Helicopter was the endless runner which inspired Flappy Bird. It was one of the gems of every flash portal back in the day and I have memories myself of playing it in computer labs at school. It was the kind of simple to pick up but hard to master game that could keep you entertained for a while, at least until the bell rang.
Helicopter2002 does a good job of recreating that feeling. The simple looping MIDI track and endless counting score keep you engaged and always up for one more run. And just like Super Meat Boy or other “difficult” games, one click is all you need to start another round. Trading the black and green for blue and orange does just enough to differentiate the two without changing anything important. It has that same retro flash game charm and with the era of flash games behind us and Internet Archive constantly fighting to keep these old classics alive, this version is a suitable substitute. All you need is a mouse and you’ll have plenty of retro fun. Look forward to my next review by November 13th and look below the screenshots for the technical details and where to try it out for yourself.
